Students from St. Patrick's School will feel like they've stepped back in time, as "Sister" enters the classroom, ready to teach her students some catechism lessons!
Late Nite Catechism is an uproariously funny play that takes the audience back to their youth. The irrepressible "Sister" teaches class to a roomful of "students" (the audience). Throughout the course of the class the benevolent instructor rewards the "students" for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and other nifty prizes. Naughty students may well find themselves on stage sitting in a corner reflecting their actions. However, even the most reluctant "students" will be clamoring to get into this Sister's "class."
Late Nite Catechism 2: The fun continues in Sister’s second catechism class! It is not necessary to be a graduate of Late Nite Catechism to enjoy this one – Sister will give extra attention to her slower students! She has felt banners, a filmstrip, handouts, historical facts and hysterical insights to explain the goal of every nun: getting into heaven and bringing along as many of the faithful as possible. Using a special version of Chutes & Ladders to demonstrate her point, Sister tells us where we have gone wrong, and no one is excused from her firm belief that "sometimes we feel guilty because we are guilty."
The play is now in its 14th year, and has been performed in every state in the U.S. as well as Canada, the U.K., and Australia. We feel privileged to bring "Sister" here to Portland to help us kick off our Parish Festival weekend!
Tickets are $30 each in advance, $35 at the door. Admission price also includes the cover charge for the Gathering Tent.

The production of Late Nite Catechism 2, performed at our Parish Festival, will be done under the direction of Entertainment Events, a New York City production company . The actress who will be playing Sister is Karen Sheridan.
Our Gathering Tent is a huge, L-shaped tent. The stage will be at one end of one of the legs of the L. That area of the tent will be completely enclosed with side-panels, which will create a theater atmosphere. Ms. Sheridan will wear a lapel-microphone, which will ensure that everyone in attendance will be able to hear every word.
KAREN SHERIDAN (Sister) was born on the South Side of Chicago and attended Catholic schools for 21 years (yes, they held her back). Appearing in numerous plays in both Chicago and Detroit, she's been recognized with two ensemble Jeff Citations, a Detroit Free Press and two Oakland Press Awards. Karen was in the second national tour of Into the Woods and has taught at a number of schools including Ringling Brothers Clown College. She dons the habit thanks to LNC's original "Sister", Maripat Donovan, who once shared a candy bar with her then raised a hand and said, "Sister, Karen has candy!"
Did you know that Sisters do not receive Social Security? Because of this, many convents have had to depend on welfare in order to care for their elderly and infirm.
At the end of the performance, a collection will be taken up and the audience is encouraged to give generously! To date, the LNC franchise has collected over two million dollars for retired Sisters.
In 2009, we collected almost $600 at the end of the play. The money was sent to Nazareth, Michigan to support the Sisters of St. Joseph who live there.
Parking is available in the Alton Park area, in the area directly west of the Gathering Tent, behind Westside Grocery, or along any of the residential streets surrounding the school and church. We will have golf carts available to transport you if you cannot walk the distance to the tent---flag one down if you need a ride, or phone (517) 575-8000 and we’ll send one to get you!
